Professionally Speaking Magazine

Professionally Speaking is the Ontario College of Teachers’ magazine. Published quarterly betweem 1997 and 2021, the magazine features articles and other resources that focus on current issues and trends in Ontario education.

For your major task this week, browse the library of Professionally Speaking back issues at the Ontario College of Teachers website.

Choose an article from a back issue that addresses an educational topic you find interesting.

Find two additional sources of information which also address the topic you have chosen, adding additional context and/or differing points of view to that of the Professionally Speaking article. (You can draw on other Professionally Speaking articles or outside sources of information.)

Prepare a post which briefly summarizes the topic you have chosen, introducing it to other students. Draw on all three sources of information for your summary.

Read the LMS forum question below and prepare your post offline. When it is complete, log into the LMS and answer the following question which is a graded task:
Q5.5: Drawing on a Professionally Speaking magazine article plus two additional sources of information, summarize an educational topic that is of interest to you, introducing it to other students. Include an introductory and concluding paragraph plus the main body of your post in between. Cite the sources of information you draw from in-line with the text. Include a reference list at the end. For the in-line citations and reference list, follow the APA format.

It is recommended that you follow the example template below in preparing your post. The template uses filler text in order to demonstrate how in-text citations work:

📌 Throughout this week, your TA will be monitoring the LMS forums. Should you wish to post a question and/or share a short excerpt of your draft post for feedback from your TA and/or other students, log into the LMS forums and post your question and/or short excerpt with a request for feedback.

In assessing your forum post, your TA will be lenient in grading how well you have followed the APA format (see link above). Do your best. However, you will not be docked marks so long as you cite your sources in-line with the text of your post and provide a reference list at the end of your post which uses a consistent format. (See the example above.) In other words, focus most of your efforts on the text of the post itself, not on the APA format.
