Week 10 begins with an overview of the direct instruction approach to teaching and learning. 19th century educational experiments in Europe, which challenged the direct instruction approach, are next described. The rise of progressive education in the early decades of the 20th century is chronicled, leading to the release of the 1968 Hall-Dennis Report in Ontario. As an example of progressive education, the activity centre classroom is described.
